Pa State Reciprocal Agreement

A reciprocal agreement is an agreement between two states that allows residents of one state to work in another state without having to obtain a license in that state. In Pennsylvania, there are several professions that are covered by a reciprocal agreement, including nursing, psychology, and social work.

The Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing has agreements with 32 other states that allow Pennsylvania nurses to practice in those states without having to obtain a license in the state. This is important for nurses who may travel to other states for work, or who may live near a state border and want to work in a nearby state.

Similarly, the Pennsylvania State Board of Psychology has agreements with 28 other states that allow Pennsylvania psychologists to practice in those states without having to obtain a license in the state. This is important for psychologists who may conduct teletherapy sessions with patients who live in other states.

The Pennsylvania State Board of Social Workers, Marriage and Family Therapists, and Professional Counselors has agreements with 12 other states that allow Pennsylvania social workers, marriage and family therapists, and professional counselors to practice in those states without having to obtain a license in the state. This is important for these professions as well, as social workers, marriage and family therapists, and professional counselors may also conduct teletherapy sessions with patients who live in other states.

Reciprocal agreements make it easier for professionals to work across state lines. They reduce the bureaucratic burden of obtaining multiple licenses and allow professionals to focus on their work instead of navigating complex licensing requirements. If you are a licensed professional in Pennsylvania and are interested in working in another state, check with the appropriate state board to see if there is a reciprocal agreement in place.
